10.Complete Character Description: Standing at an average height she is relatively well built. She has reddish-brown hair that tends to look redder than brown though and brown eyes. Her hair is worn at varying lengths from a bob to quite long. At the moment it is quite long and is worn in a bun on the top of her head. When she isn’t in her Starfleet uniform she likes to wear dresses ranging from simple ones to formal ones depending on the occasion. She is also known to wear skirt and blouse with a jacket on some formal occasions.

11. Personality: Janeway is a tough captain who is not afraid to take chances, while her intelligence, thoughtfulness, dedication and diplomacy have earned her respect and recognition as one of the best in Starfleet. Her talents in engineering and science allow her hands-on expertise, if necessary; as such she has shown a tendency to defy the Starfleet protocol against beam-down of commanding officers into unsecured away team missions. She prefers to be addressed as "Captain" rather than either the gender-based "sir" or "ma'am." Aside from math and the sciences, her studies have included chromo-linguistics, American Sign Language, and the gestural idioms of the Leyron.

She takes great value in the scientific method and clear-cut choices which has given her a healthy dose of scepticism, which usually provides a command asset in dealing with new situations. Her preference for difficult studies is self-traced back to childhood, when she would prefer that to outdoor play. Since then, she has indicated no pleasure in outdoor camping, hiking, or cooking.

For relaxation, Janeway enjoys a variety of activities including role-playing and recreation in Holodeck programs, such as Gothic novels, skiing and sailing. In her youth in the farmland of rural Indiana, she played tennis, and at age 12 walked back from a match she lost for 7 km in a thunderstorm; however, she has not played the game regularly since 2354 (or there about).

Tying into the fact that she walked home for 7km in a thunderstorm shows that she is extremely stubborn in doing what she wants and will do anything to prove herself. This also resulted in her trying extremely hard in school and later Starfleet Academy to prove to people that she wasn't like the stereotypical woman.

She is loyal to her friends and family to a default and loves each of them greatly in her own way. Janeway often believes, even though she has never voiced it, that she wouldn't never have gotten where she is today without her family and friends and their ability to make her seen the good in things as well as motivate her to do what she wants- even if her parents tried to get her into many activities as a child that she takes no enjoyment in.

12. Background:
Kathryn Elizabeth Janeway was born on May 20 2336 in Bloomington, Indiana on Earth to Charles and Penelope Janeway. Charles was a Starfleet Admiral and Penelope was a stay-at-home mother. When Kathryn was four her younger sister, Phoebe was born.
Growing up in the plains around her Grandfather’s farm she often played in the yard, climbing trees and the like, when she was six she watched a lightening strike hit a tree she had climbed just hours earlier. She later reminisced that these thunderstorms were the scariest anomaly that one would experience out in those plains, especially when one was a young child. Also as a young child, Kathryn’s parents took her to ballet lessons where she learned numerous dances including “The Dying Swan” which she later performed at a talent night aboard Voyager. She would also often go hiking with her father and at one time, when she was nine, visited the Grand Canyon or as her father called it the “the biggest ditch on Earth” but she always preferred the farm land as she found that sort of terrain to dusty for her liking.

As well as taking Ballet lessons she learnt to play tennis. When she was twelve she walked the 7km home during a thunderstorm after she lost a match. Giving Tennis up at the end of high school she didn’t play for nineteen years before she decided to take it up again. Among all of that her father also taught her how to play pool though she didn’t play all that often.

Always fascinated with her family history, especially the tale of Shannon O’Donnell who supposedly have been a main instigator in the formation of the Millennium Gate and her father’s career in Starfleet; she decided to join Starfleet after graduating from High School. During this time she studied various different languages including- chromolinguistics, American Sign Language, the gestural idioms of the Leyrom and started to learn basic Klingonese but she struggled with it so gave up learning it. Janeway also studied and excelled at both science and mathematics.

Upon joining Starfleet she formed a close relationship with Boothby who would bring her fresh roses to her quarters each morning. Along with all her classes she took and friendships she formed she spent a lot of time at the coffee shop Night Owl which was found on Market Street. Being addicted to coffee helped her through many of her classes and all-nighters that she pulled while studying.

Her first posting was aboard the USS Al-Batani under the command of Captain Owen Paris as its science officer when it participated in the Arias Expedition. It all went well apart from the fact that she knocked out power to six decks by misaligning the ships positronic relays, which as you can imagine would be rather disastrous.
When she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant she was a member of an away team defending a Federation outpost from Cardassians during one of their border conflicts. Her team ended up cut off in the fight that lasted for three days. During this battle she and an ensign had to save a Cardassian’s life at the order of their commanding officer. At first she that her commander was crazy but later realised why he had asked them to do that. This is now one of her proudest moments.

In 2365 Janeway first met Tuvok who, in front of three Starfleet Admirals, dressed her down for failing to observe proper tactical procedures during her first command. At first she was hurt by this but later realised that she was correct. During that decade they kept up a correspondence and ended up becoming close friends.
Her first year as a commander was spent aboard the USS Billings where she sent an away team to survey a volcanic moon. When they returned with three members severly injured due to a magma eruption she went to the moon alone the next day to complete the survey. She believed that she should show the crew that their suffering was not in vain despite the fact that she easily could have been killed.

In 2371 Janeway took command of the USS Voyager with its first mission to locate a missing Maquis vessel that was last seen in the Bandlands. As the Bandlands are extremely dangerous to navigate she proposed to Admiral Patterson to rehabilitate ex-Maquis Tom Paris who was currently in the Federation Penal Colony located on New Zealand in help finding the ship as he was renowned for his flying skills. In exchange Janeway offered Paris to help him at the next outmate review that he faced.

Their mission started out well but soon they were engulfed by a massive energy wave which hurled them into the Delta Quadrant. Soon Kathryn discovered that the ‘Caretaker’ had brought them and the Maquis ship to the quadrant whom had been looking for a way to reproduce as his life was coming to an end. His story once told revealed that he and another like him had accidentally ruined the home world of the Ocampa, a species native to the Delta Quadrant. After the Caretaker died, Kathryn destroyed his array to keep it from falling into the hands of the Kazon who wanted to use it to destroy the Ocampa. Then, came one of the most difficult tasks she had faced to the date- she had to merge the two crews together as she know had the Maquis along with her crew, in order to return home safely. A trip that, if calculated correctly would take them over 75 years at Voyager’s maximum velocity. Not long after arriving in the Delta Quadran, Janeway and her crew met a Talaxian named Neelix and Kes who was an Ocampan. The two of them joined the crew of Voyager after the Caretaker’s death and fitted in right away.

After the joining of the two crews, Janeway faced many problems as neither crew wanted to work with the other. This included the choice of Torres and Carey for the position of Chief Engineer- both wanted it and neither wanted the other to have it. Janeway eventually decided on Torres for the job even if she was reluctant at first because of Torres’s tempter but she agreed and didn’t regret it. It took Janeway awhile but she eventually got the two crews working as one to ensure their arrival home to the Alpha Quadrant.

Paris and Janeway were transported back in time due to a fracture in subspace when they visited a planet which had been devastated by some type of explosion. Getting caught in a group of protestors and government officials who were disagreeing over an energy source and the potential dangers of using it, the protestors eventually took over the power plant which resulted in Janeway coming to believe that it would become the source of the explosion. This wasn’t the case though. As the away team from Voyager tried to rescue them by cutting into the subspace she realised that this was what actually caused the explosion. Eventually she closed the rift and the timeline changed into one where the explosion never happened.

During that first year she also made contact with various other different aliens including the Viidians who harvested Neelix's lungs as they were suffering from a Phage and needed new organs to continue to survive. She also discovered that one of her crew members was a spy sending Federation Technology to the Kazan one of their enemies.

During the next year she continued to meet more alien species including Q who could transport them anywhere as well as change his look. She also had to rescue Tom and Harry from a prison that they had been put in due to some misunderstanding.

She and hte rest of the crew continued to face many different problems and Alien Species until she and Chakotay fell ill with an incurable disease they were stranded on a planet where it was inhibited by it's atmosphere. While on the planet the two of them started to develop feelins for each other. Eventually the Voyager crew discovered a cure for the disease and came back to pick them up. Once again on Voyager Kathryn surpressed her feelings and didn't act on them as she believed it was unproffesional to form a relationship with her second in command.

Kathryn is from just before Voyager is picked them up off the planet so she does not know that she repressed her feelings and didn't form a relationship with Chakotay
